About the Project
When Karen and David approached us with their ambitious plans to extend across the entire back of the house, we were as excited as they were about how they would completely transform their home with the design.
Whilst in principle a very typical extension project -remove hopeless conservatory, build rear extension – it did present some challenges.
For the design to work, a large, goal-post steel structure would need to be installed. Columns would need anchoring to underpinned foundations, and a steel beam bolted together in 3 sections across the entire building width.
The entire back of the house would need propping up during this process. First-floor joists were strengthened and supported, and internal dividing walls were removed. Three small spaces transformed into one large open plan kitchen / dining room and living area.
With the structure watertight, the new kitchen was soon ordered and the trades were completing their first fixes.

The family had the foresight to move out for 3-4 months during this building project, which was a real blessing because it would have been impossible to work around them.
Fortunately, with the house watertight and secure by December, when Covid played its part David found himself camping out there for Christmas, waiting for the quartz and final installation stages of the kitchen to take place. A lot of the decorating got done during this time, and early in the New Year the family moved back in. With Karen’s finishing touches, they really have transformed their living space.
